PHILADELPHIA — Phillies catcher Rafael Marchan is going on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to 7/23) with left knee patellar tendinitis. As a corresponding move, catcher Payton Henry was selected to the big league roster. To make room for Henry on the 40-man roster, Brad Keller was transferred to the 60-day IL. Henry will wear No. 35.
Henry, 29, re-signed with the Phillies organization on July 4 after spending most of the year in the New York Yankees organization with the Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. Henry, who has played 10 seasons in the minor leagues and has some big league time with the Miami Marlins in 2021 and 2022, was in big league camp with the Phillies last year and spent all of 2025 with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs. In 200 minor league plate appearances this season, Henry is batting .201 with a .576 OPS.
Marchan left Wednesday’s game early in the ninth inning with a knee injury. Interim manager Don Mattingly said Marchan felt his knee on a swing earlier in the game and that he would get an MRI on Thursday.
Mattingly said pregame on Friday that Marchan’s MRI “came back better than we thought.”
“They haven’t given us a real timetable, but it didn’t sound like it was extended,” Mattingly said.
The Phillies now have two catchers on the IL. Garrett Stubbs (left wrist inflammation) was placed on the 10-day IL on Tuesday. Philadelphia hasn’t had a catcher start a game behind the plate that wasn’t Stubbs, Marchan or J.T. Realmuto since 2024.
